Finding the Perfect Asscher Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

One of my favorite things to do at Famille is to help a gentleman create an engagement ring. Today, this often begins with a couple exploring ideas together and considering the myriad of details in making a ring. The process starts with finding the perfect diamond. I love explaining the cuts and quality differences and their effects on pricing. After the center stone is chosen, the setting can start to take form based on the shape. The bride's input helps with the final details. The romantic in me loves to create the bride's dream ring.
Recently, I had the pleasure of selling a second Asscher cut diamond to the same family. I say second because 25 years ago, I sold an asscher cut diamond to his future father in law! Often in our business, the jeweler you purchase your engagement ring from, becomes your trusted family jeweler for life.
Admittedly, I am the diamond geek of the firm. I spent my early days in the jewelry business working for the renowned firm Tiffany & Company in New York as the head diamond buyer. I had the pleasure of working with Elsa Peretti, Angela Cummings and Harry Platt… the great grandson of the founder Charles Tiffany. I transferred my love of buying the best diamonds to selling them in Greenwich for the past 40 + years. So when I tell you I was excited about this project, you understand why.
The Asscher diamonds was developed in 1902 by the famous diamond cutter, Joseph Asscher. His workshop was the go to cutter of his day. He cut many of the world’s famous quality diamond shapes, including the famed Cullinan diamond. The “Asscher cut “ was the first diamond cut to be a patented cut, and was revolutionary as it took an unassuming emerald cut stone into a revolutionary world of geometric precision, perfect for the Art Deco period in which it was founded.

In conversations with the bride and groom to be, we evolved a setting that would complement the Asher cut center and make the ring wearable in today’s world. A matched pair of Trapezoid cut diamonds flanking the center diamond to make a transition from stone to finger seamless. We ended with a design that is classic and contemporary at the same time.
At Famille, we build our rings by hand, to the measurements of the stone. Each ring is a work of art, made by the same skilled eyes and hands of bench jewelers and setters who have worked with us for all my time in Greenwich. I am still receiving compliments from the family and everyone who sees the bride's beautiful ring.
In the end, one of my favorite things to do has become one of my greatest triumphs: to be the trusted person families can call to create the perfect engagement ring. For this family it was the 3rd generation.
Sincerely,
Randy Lapointe
